Hippophae rhamnoides
Silver-green foliage and bright orange berries protected by large thorns. Tolerates poor soil and drought once established. Requires both male and female plants to produce berries. Fixes its own nitrogen with Frankia bacteria present in root nodules.
Size: 10-14 ft tall
Drought Resistance: Good
Cold Hardiness: Excellent
Growth Rate: 1-2 feet per year
Lifespan: 30+ years
Wildlife Value: highly valuable to birds, especially ground-dwelling birds like grouse and partridges. Fairly deer-resistant because the foliage is unpalatable and the thorns deter browsing.

Fun Fact: Hippophae is derived from the Ancient Greek words hippos (horse) and phaos (light or shine), literally translating to “shining horse.” This name comes from an ancient Greek practice of feeding the leaves and branches of the plant to horses to promote weight gain and make their coats shiny.
