Household Hazardous Waste Day

The district hosts a household hazardous waste collection day for all Weston County residents to bring their hazardous waste for proper recycling or disposal. At this time, the district does not charge residents for this service, but it is requested that people using this service offer a donation of money or food. Monetary donations will be used to purchase food vouchers from local grocery stores, so all donations go to the Bread Office.

When: June 13th, 10 am – 1 pm

In an effort to keep the cost of this program down, we are asking that people only bring waste that cannot be disposed of at the landfill. Please note the following:

  • Latex paint – this can be disposed of in your dumpster or at the landfill as long as the paint is dry. If it isn’t already dry, you can mix it with an absorbent material, such as dirt or clay cat litter, to bulk it up, and allow that mixture to dry before disposing of it.
  • Automotive batteries – the landfill will accept automotive batteries.

So, what can I bring?

The district can take a wide variety of items at the hazardous waste day, including:

  • Automotive– (DO NOT MIX AUTO FLUIDS) antifreeze, oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid

  • Paints/Solvents- Oil-based paints, paint stripper, paint thinner, wood preservatives. NO LATEX PAINT.

  • Lawn & Garden- fertilizers, pesticides, rodent poisons, fungicides

  • Home- bleach, disinfectants, drain cleaner, glues, nail polish remover, aerosols, lighter fluid

  • Batteries, devices, and lightbulbs- any device with a rechargeable battery that cannot be easily removed, household batteries, rechargeable batteries, e-cigarettes/vape pens, florescent light tubes, CFLs and other mercury-containing bulbs

  • Electronics – computers, monitors, printers, TVs, media players, etc. Many items can be disposed of at the landfill, but we will sort electronics by recyclable/non-hazardous/hazardous and make sure it gets disposed of properly.

The Newcastle Police Department also offers prescription drug disposal at Hazardous Waste Day.

This is a list of common items. Please direct any specific questions to the district office

Donations

While we don’t charge for this service, we do ask that anyone bringing items for disposal please also bring food to donate to the Bread Office, our local food bank distribution in Weston County.

Any non-perishable item may be donated, but the following items are especially helpful:

  • Canned goods: vegetables, fruits, soups, milk, etc.

  • Baking items: flour, sugar, powdered milk, baking soda, etc.

  • Boxed baking mixes

  • Packaged items: drinks, cereal, and snack items

  • Diapers, wipes, personal hygiene items, and toiletries

Business Waste

If local businesses would like to bring their waste, the District will charge a disposal fee for the item(s). Please contact the District to inquire about specific costs and we can let the Contractor know what is coming.
